The recent addition of concrete bunkers at the Cazenovia Transfer Station has simplified the recycling process for residents and landfill employees. Four, two-sided, floored concrete bunkers have been installed at the Cazenovia Transfer station on Consteine Bridge Rd. The top of each bunker sits about four-feet above ground level and holds one large green roll-off container, used by the transfer stations to collect recycled paper and cardboard along with glass, plastic, steel and aluminum containers. The new collection system has increased the drive through area at the facility, providing more maneuverability and faster drop off time for residents. The recycling containers, formerly accessed by steel stairs are now at waist/chest level for easier and safer disposal of recyclable items. James A. Zecca, director said, “Our primary goal in restructuring the recyclable drop-off area was for the safety of the residents. Eliminating the steel stairs and enlarging the drive through area has accomplished that goal. “Further, the new configuration allows our employees easy access to the roll-off containers for pick up and delivery. Residential and truck traffic are now on the opposite side of the concrete bunkers.” Operations Manager Andy Wolff said that the new system at the Cazenovia Transfer Station was introduced to residents for the first time last weekend. “It was a great success. People were in and out much faster and there was a lot less congestion in the drive through area.” Wolff noted that filling the roll-off containers from the top rather than the side, as was the previous practice, has increased capacity and eliminated one trip to the Buyea Rd. Landfill on Saturdays. The new staggered bunker system was designed by the landfill employees and constructed by the county work force. Construction took about one month, according to Wolff. “Last summer we reconfigured the recyclable drop-off area at the Buyea Rd. Convenience Station. Our goal is to streamline the systems at the Sullivan and Hamilton transfer stations next year,” said Zecca. The Cazenovia Transfer Station is open Friday and Saturday from 7:10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
