The A.U.O. (Aggravated Unlicensed Operation) patrol was begun in 2001 as a grant-funded initiative of the STOP-DWI Program. The idea was to have a probation officer partner with a Deputy or Police Officer and provide enhanced community supervision on D.W.I. Probationers. This enhanced level of supervision ensures that individuals who might be at higher risk for violation of their terms of probation will receive additional interaction with probation and other law enforcement officers in the community. When grant money for this purpose disappeared, this activity was continued with regular STOP-DWI funds. STOP-DWI fully supported this program as it felt it improves public safety and conveys a desired message to D.W.I. Probationers, that the criminal justice community is collaborating together to reduce recidivism of D.W.I. arrests in Madison County.
